Speaker Series: Traditional Foods, Medicines, and Songs of the Land with Joe Salinas (Berkeley)

Traditional Foods, Medicines, and Songs of the Land

Speaker: Joe Salinas (Kashia Pomo Band of Indians)

For thousands of years, the coastal forests and valleys of Northern California have provided a rich bounty of life sustained by a deep relationship between the land and the Kashia Band of Pomo Indians. Join us for an enriching evening with Joe Salinas as he shares the living traditions of Northern California’s indigenous ecosystems.

In this talk, Joe will introduce us to his People's perspectives on foraging, highlighting wild foods and powerful medicines found right in our backyard. Beyond the practical uses of these plants, he will share the foundational connection between the landscape and his culture. You will be introduced to sacred songs and dances that honor the natural world, art forms that are not performance, but active expressions of gratitude and respect for the life that feeds and heals us.
