What would you do if you got lost in the woods?  And what should you always bring with you every time you go to the woods?

In this free live & recorded talk, we will answer these questions and share tools and tips to stay safe in the woods. Foraging can get so exciting that we can end up disoriented. It also puts us in places where we are in remote, off-grid locations. What would happen if we had an accident or became lost? We'll cover:

• Basic wilderness safety tips

• Equipment to consider carrying: navigation, technology

• What to do if you have to spend the unexpected night out

• Environmental injuries, including wild animals

• Case studies that demonstrate how Search and Rescue works 

This is a free talk, but advanced registration is required. You will receive a calendar invite with the Zoom link about a week before the event and also a follow-up email with a link to the recording if you are unable to attend live within a few days after the event.

Presenters

Michael St. John has spent 45 years as a search and rescue volunteer, developing and running one of the most respected Search & Rescue teams in California. As Unit Leader of the Search and Rescue team in Marin County, he leads searches across the state and has been called upon to assist in SAR missions in places as far-flung as Japan and Peru. After a 33-year career in firefighting, including holding the title of chief, he is now retired, and is a full-time volunteer dedicating his time to developing and delivering SAR and abduction trainings, overseeing SAR missions, and leading the 120-person SAR unit in Marin. 

Abi Fitzgerald is a cardiac nurse and wilderness first responder who has volunteered with Search and Rescue since 2010. She has guided backpacking trips in remote regions of Alaska, Yosemite, and the Adirondacks, and is the mom of a six-year-old daughter and nine-year-old son.      

Christopher O'Maelmacasa, aka Trash Panda Permaculture, is an instructor with Fork in the Path and a leading botanist. He is one of the most knowledgeable people about the ecology of the Sierra Nevada region. Christopher holds an MA in integrative ecology from UNR, is on the board of the Nevada Native Plant Society, and leads walks and workshops throughout the region, specializing in ethnobotany. Christopher is currently writing a comprehensive guide to edible and medicinal plants of the Sierra Nevada and is co-author of an upcoming book on California trees.
