What You'll Learn

What do mushrooms need to grow? How can we regeneratively grow gourmet edible, medicinal and wild mushrooms at home? How can we cultivate ecological and social regeneration with fungi? This workshop will give a theoretical and practical framework for working with our fungal allies, at home and in our communities. We will explore basic fungal biology and various techniques of mushroom cultivation, as well as biofiltration and bioremediation with fungi and other microbes. We will have hands-on practice of a method of mushroom cultivation that you can take with you and continue to grow at home. Participants will also have an opportunity to make an outdoor mushroom bed. This workshop is designed for beginning cultivators, but we will gladly accommodate those with experience.

Instructor

Maya Elson (she/they)

Raised in the forest, Maya brings their skills as a mycologist, organizer, naturalist and teacher to facilitate connection with the wild world. With an environmental education career spanning 20 years, Maya makes learning fun, engaging, and relevant. Even though Maya has been leading mushroom and plant foraging classes for the last 8 years in the Santa Cruz Mountains, each class is unique–tailored to the participant’s interests, season and location. Maya is also a biologist whose work explores the dynamic relationships between fire, soil, and humans, and consults wildfire mitigation and bioremediation projects internationally.
