Morels, Porcini & Beyond: Understanding Sierra Nevada Ecology

In the spring, to find mushrooms, go to the mountains! This will be a special program led by expert naturalist Thea Chesney, renowned mycologist and photographer Alan Rockefeller, plus mycocentric ecologist Ryath Beauchene and botanist Christopher O’Maelmacasa with support from Carrie Staller.

We will not only look for morels and spring porcini, but also learn to understand the ecology and layers of new life forming beneath our feet that ultimately lead to the regrowth and resilience of our beautiful mountain forests after fire.

This program will teach you foundational skills to be able to go foraging on your own while minimizing your impact. We will include a cooking demo, cover mushroom anatomy for identification, tree and plant identification, poisonous and edible mushrooms, and forest safety.  Find the mythical “fairy fart” mushroom, the gorgeous purple cup fungs, and more! Fun for all ages. 3-5 miles on uneven terrain required.

8 classes (not a series): May 17, 18, 31, June 1, 7,8, 14, 15
