Seaweed Foraging Classes

Learn how to identify, use, and sustainably harvest the bountiful seaweeds of the Sonoma coast. From ancient times to the present, seaweeds have been used by coastal peoples all over the world for food, medicine, and as soil amendments for their gardens. Our class covers a range of common edible and medicinal species. We will gather on the beach, show you several easy-to-identify species, and how to harvest them so they can continue to grow. Then, we head into the exposed intertidal zone at low tide to see the abundant seaweed and magical sea creatures that call it home. The class includes a cooking demo of several varieties of seaweed, and each person can take home fresh seaweed to share with friends and family, or dry and preserve to eat year-round. This class is seasonal and offered only in the summertime.
